Just an aside, but isn't SquirrelMail a little antiquated?
You might like to look at roundcube ( http://roundcube.net/ ) as an 
alternative.

As far as I'm aware, roundcube is no more difficult to setup than 
SquirrelMail, but looks and functions better.

That said, go with SquirrelMail if it's what you're comfortable with. :)
