Some people have mentioned dojo, xajax, and possibly others. The
choice would be something worth discussing, but in principle I am in
favour of adding a well-maintained library.

Tim: Javascript libraries can not introduce any new threats I can
think of. The only chance is if the user can write some malicious
javascript on your site - which we avoid already anyway.
