I spent a week and a half trying to do it.

It took me three days to comprehend the menu system, but even after I  
got it mostly working ..
i got lost, and ended up sending the last version of the patch to  
Dries (in portland)

Since then i've been too busy with the forms api to actually work on  
the menu system.
