[development] can anyone reproduce the bug previewing issue followups?

eureka! i found the problem.  the results aren't very pretty, though:

anyone who's interested in project followup previews working is
encouraged to read that and leave your thoughts.  i'm too tired and
burned out to write a patch at the moment, and i'm only 75% sure my
suggestion (#1) is the best course of action.  at least we finally
understand the problem. ;)
