I was just building a "select_for_select" function. This sounds soo much like 
it.

And it makes me think: with all the discussion going on: is the contrib a good 
place to maintain a helpers.module? To maintain a growing set of library 
functions for Drupal?

Would a distribution, completely separate fron drupal core be a better place?

Really, there seems to be a good reason against every single function and 
parameter of a function within Drupal... and they are very good reasons. For 
the people outing the reasons...
