Hello,
I've submitted a patch which allows you to setup Drupal on SQLite. You can find it here: http://drupal.org/node/67349#comment-136702.
I think that the implemented "ALTER TABLE" suffices (tested with cck on 4.7.3). I will run some benchmarks tomorrow.
If you can find some spare minutes, please give it a try. The installation is very simple.
