IANAL, but my understanding after a lot of years in business, is this:

In the US, "work for hire" is a legal phrase that implies that all  
you do is owned by your employer. That's how most employer/employee  
relationships are defined. However, most consulting and contracting  
jobs are not work for hire. The contractor does work under terms  
specified within the contract. Except for what is provided in the  
agreement, the contractor owns all of his/her own work.
