This has already been done, for the templates patch me , dries ,  
vlado and chx were working on.

There's a couple of small bugs, but that's an updated version of the  
templates work for drupal 5, including all templates
split, and all theme calls changed to theme('thing', array('param' =>  
123, 'param2' => 321); (which is necessary to be able to
load templates without requiring phptemplate_stub functions)
