Assuming you're talking about the sessions.hostname db column, it
could be useful for auditing abuse, but for this you ideally want to
log some additional http headers (which, granted, could be faked, but
might show you which machine behind a proxy etc).  Perhaps it could be
replaced with a contrib module for additional logging.
