I don't understand all the changes well enough to write something, but we should also mention the themeing changes and that you will now have lots of .tpl files you can drop in your theme to more easily customize your site.

I drafted a beta 1 announcement (without the usual text copied over,
because I was away from the net, while writing). I'd welcome if people
would contribute/fix/enhance the text. There are placeholders for
links and numbers too :)
