Thanks. This is almost what I want, but not quite -- I'm actually  
looking for something that exactly matches what Drupal generates.

I wound up writing my own module (collapse_text) that does this. I've  
put it up on Drupal.org (although I have to wait, for some reason, to  
create a release -- it won't let me select DRUPAL-5 as the tag yet...).
