I can't remember what else I did but this is the php.ini settings that
worked for me on ubuntu (8.10)

;xdebug
zend_extension=/usr/lib/php5/20060613+lfs/xdebug.so
[debug]
; Remote settings
xdebug.remote_autostart=off
xdebug.remote_enable=on
xdebug.remote_handler=dbgp
xdebug.remote_mode=req
xdebug.remote_host=drupalhost
xdebug.remote_port=9000
