If you would like a voice from a high profile developer, here is my voice:
I find work on core to be incredibly, mind-numbingly dull. Not due to
the work, but due to the difficulty of getting it committed. If i had to
go through a gateway process on my own projects, where someone who
doesn't even necessarily understand the project has to decide whether or
not it gets committed was in the way, I would certainly have never ended
up a big time Drupal developer. The openness of contrib allowed me to
succeed on my own merits.
It has allowed others to fail on their own merits. What it hasn't yet
done is provided the community a way of letting people know about the
successes and failures of developers. We need to focus on community
moderation, not source code moderation.
