The "core team" - it would be nice to meet these mythical folks.
Could you make a list of who they are?  (point being: maintaining that
list is more trouble than it's worth)

Duplication is a problem, but removing duplication is only one answer.
 The other answer is better documentation of the differences.  There's
lots of great work toward that in
