I think this is the best way to go. I asked about a similar thing a while
back (regarding getting D6 modules to run on D7), and after doing a bit of
digging came to the conclusion that the reason there isn't
a compatibility layer that would allow D7 to run D6 modules is simply
because Drupal devs have limited time, and this just isn't at the top of
anyone's list. It's a huge amount of work, and has limited benefit. Sure, it
would allow some modules that are only in D5 to run in D6, but these are (as
far as I've seen) all edge cases, and the time spent writing the
compatibility layer would allow for all of these modules to be upgraded
themselves about ten times over.
