Thanks, Earnie. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, my install code guarantees that I am the highest weight in the system table, so I will always have the last laugh, so to speak.

When to fire the hooks is always evil.  Consider changing the weight value in the system table for your module so that it executes after the CCK module.
