      With respect, a good deal of the discussion here has been around 
collaboration.   It's tempting to think that any of us could 'just do 
the whole thing ourselves' but in my experience that kind of approach 
too often leads to a collection of independent, 
started-but-never-finished projects and burned-out, disillusioned 
contributors.

   Taxonomy is a probably not a good way to approach a table of 
contents.  To begin with,
the table of contents for the existing handbook has 740+ entries.   The 
issue of working with large taxonomies has its own thread.

      Book module has shortcomings.   There is a process for reporting 
bugs, proposing features, and discussing solutions.  Let's take the 
discussion about book.module and other development issues over there.

      I believe that there's a discussion in progress about "process" 
and workflow... which brings us nicely to your original question about 
goals and "what's going on here?"   Does anyone who's been on the list 
for a while want to give us a little summary of where things are?
