Great point Laura, and to expand on that,
It's the difference between communicating a product as a world of
possible outcomes (target markets) vs. presenting a product as a to-do
list (features).
It's not like talking about the features is not a good thing. I just
think that the role of marketing is to present a potential fully-formed
future --what can be done with a product-- as opposed to just a set of
features that then leave the potential user "hanging" by trying to
figure out what kind of future they can build with the product. And I
guess this translates into the way the product has been developed up
until now.
Drupal is feature heavy thanks to its module; but sometimes those
features do not work with each other. Having used more than a few
modules beyond the core, I get the feeling module developers for Drupal
seem to focus too much on getting the feature they want to work without
thinking how they can expand on other modules to serve a certain set of
needs within a target audience (or maket). That's the difference
between focusing on what a person can do with Drupal versus developing
the software's specs.
I hope that, if anything, this new "ABOUT" will set the tone for future
development of the product.
