I am not sure where I fall on this.  I just spent the last hour digging 
through a bunch of old comments.  And while several of them were 
totally out of place support forum questions, several of them were 
genuine handbook content that simply got posted as comments.  I was 
able to fold them back into the handbook and then delete them.  I guess 
I would have had a hard time finding that same content in the 
forums....at least with the way the search currently works.

Don't get me wrong, maybe we should turn them off just for a while as 
an experiment.  I just think it might have a bit of a chilling effect 
on the handbook.  Feel free to disagree with me, or move ahead if 
others feel strongly.

Oh yeah, please don't turn off current comment's visibility.  Just turn 
off write access.
