Here's my brief edit (very rough, has some of Boris's suggestions,
will do another edit on Sunday night from the Mark Spencer)
What is Drupal?
Drupal is a powerful open-source web platform which integrates
many popular features from content management
systems, weblogs, collaborative tools and discussion boards
into one easy-to-use package. Common ways to use Drupal:
• Content Management:easily create, publish and revise
static web pages, blogs, podcasts, video blogs with optional
automatic versioning and simple workflow
• Community Management: build online communities. Using Drupal's
community features, any website can be a social network.
• Development Platform: the Drupal environment is the ultimate in
Developer friendly: cleanly structured, easy to learn,
and easy to extend in non trivial ways
Why Drupal?
• Flexibility: Drupal functionality is structured into ‘modules’
which can be turned on or off at will, your Drupal site
can adapt perfectly to your specific needs.
• Power: the Drupal ‘core’ consists of dozens of features,
which are complemented by over a hundred contributed
modules that do everything from publishing workflow
and mailing list integration to image galleries, e-commerce,
WYSIWYG editing and more!
• Accessibility: out of the box, all Drupal sites are search engine
optimized and accessible due to Drupal's use of standards based
CSS and XHTML
• Stability: thanks to advanced features like caching and
throttling, Drupal can handle traffic spikes and accomodate
thousands of users easily.
• Support: Drupal has a dedicated community of enthousiasts
to help you out. And if that’s not enough, you can get
commercial support from companies like CivicSpace and
Bryght who are centered around Drupal.
Drupal Facts
• Runs on the popular Apache / PHP / SQL platform as well as Windows
• Licensed under the GPL.
Examples
A few interesting websites powered by Drupal:
• Marc Canter: Ourmedia.org - unlimited storage and unlimited
bandwith for
the world's media forever
• Tony Perkins: AlwaysOn GoingOn Network
• citizen journalism: Bayosphere,, Urban Vancouver, BlufftonToday
• cool CivicSpace sites: PhillyFuture, ?
