Liza and I got together on IRC and had a 30 minute+ brainstorm to
identify potential target markets.

We also discussed the primary difference between a 'benefit' and a
'feature' and the focus of the marketing documentation (depending on the
target of course) is to talk about the benefits.

We are going to try and schedule another brainstorming session to get a
list of 'features' (say 200) and boil them down to 6-12 key benefits -
grouping them by target audience.

The goal of the chat was to come up with some marketing documentation
tasks... and I think this is the right start. Before we go off writing
reams of documentation we should know:

a) who we are selling to (targets)
b) what we are selling them (benefits)

Tasks:
Phase 1)
-Continue to identify targets (creating more personae helps)
-Create a comprehensive list of features - there are literally hundreds
in total but 6-12 features per core/contrib modules is a good target.
-Translate features into benefits.
-Match benefits to the needs of targets.

-Collect general opensource/free software marketing materials. We don't
need to re-invent the wheel. We can intertwine the benefits of open
source / free software in our own marketing writing.

Phase 2)
- Write a chapter (collection of pages) for each target group
- Re-write / re-use as much of the existing writing as possible.

There will be a lot of repetition - because some benefits are universal
across different target groups - but its the right plan to keep hitting
the same notes that resonate with all potential users.

Phase 3)
- Creation of complementary marketing resources e.g. more canned print
ads for all identified targets. etc.

Next step:
We would like to schedule another IRC chat for later this week one
evening: ping the list with your preferred date/time.
Tuesday and Wednesday don't seem to work (i just realized that I am busy
Tuesday night - Liza is busy Wednesday).

I will compile the results of our chat from tonight into another post.
