I think the gallery idea is great. And if there is server space now, I
would like to suggest expanding the pool of screenshots. This could be a
very large, visually focused presentation of the various looks and
applications of Drupal.
The phptemplate, drupal version, etc. could be seperate terms, and
therefore subordinate galleries.
I suggest this as ways to help promote Drupal, and stimulate ideas. I
suspect a lot of people would make it a regular habit to browse through
a more comprehensive gallery. And seeing is believing -- there's much
more diversity of Drupal installations out there than is reflected in
the tiny little showcase or in the contributed themes.
Would this be something that anyone could post, to showcase their own
site? I don't know. If such posts went into moderation, for review by a
pool of folks, we could keep this as open as possible while avoiding
spam and defacing.
I think we would all benefit if there were more than a dozen or two
always-featured sites in the gallery. A handful of very high quality
sites create one impression, but a gallery with scores (or even
hundreds?) of sites would reveal to n00bs the flexibility and diversity
and sheer numbers of Drupal applications.
I submit that there is a great demand for this. Months ago, every site
that I administered at the time received a lot -- often upwards of 100
hits a day -- from the "Sites that Use Drupal" page that displayed the
Drupal module's ping-ins. People want to see what others are doing with
the software. I don't know what the plans are for that page, but this
gallery approach could expand upon fulfilling the curiosity factor
visitors to Drupal.org clearly have.
