Yep, shorter is better. My suggested re-re-write:

     A book is a set of pages arranged in sequence, with
     links and menus (automatically created) to guide users from
     section to section, and to the previous and next pages.
     Users can collaborate in writing a book, reviewing or
     modifying the pages, and putting them in a preferred order.

Agreed, current explanation is too long and focuses on wrong features.
