Kieren. I went through those. There were only 70 at the time. Over half were support questions and threads over 2 years old. I was able to identify that almost all of the rest on that page had already been gradually incorporated in the existing install.txt or upgrade.txt. I read each indivdidual comment at least twice and was amazed that there wasn't more useful text. Some were opinions, some rants, some random comments with no relavence any longer. There was nothing there that had not already been addressed there or elsewhere. I talked over some comments with some folks in channel as well before removing.
I did add this line 'After you successfully install Drupal, you will want to perform some basic site configuration <http://drupal.org/node/363> starting with the settings <http://drupal.org/node/15362> menu." here as a result of a few of the comments. http://drupal.org/node/43767
Hopefully the new intro will help direct people appropriatly.
On a related note. The one unanswered part of several questions that I have to follow up here is that the page is for the CVS build of Drupal, always. The page in question is php. It is autogenerated from the cvs. I think it is time to relabel the page install.txt - cvs. We can statically include the install.txt file for the specific versions (or link to those branched versions in cvs) install.txt - 4.6.x, install.txt - 4.7.x we 'support' in the handbook now. That was the one thing I couldn't do
