it strips url to human readable information and apart from the fact that it looks nice and clean for humans, it will *boost* your rankings in most search engines. For example my site has a pr with 3 when without clean url's and a pagerank of 5 with clean url's. You will find that the tittle you blog something with will be listed on the first page in for example Google when you look for that keyword.
