Edited, with comments:
----------
In Drupal, the 'favicon', the icon that shows up on your browser's tab and
location, is called the '*shortcut icon*'.
This is controlled by your theme.
If you have not changed the menu system, you will find the settings here:
*administer >> themes >> configure.* Or
http://www.example.com/admin/themes/settings.
In <global settings> you can choose one icon to use for all your themes. Or
on the configuration page for each of your themes you can assign to that
theme a separate icon. (If your theme doesn't support shortcut icons, of
course you can't assign one.)
You have the following options:
:: Use the default icon that comes with the theme. For the default theme,
that is the Drupal icon.
:: *Path to custom icon:* Put the URL of the icon you want to use. [This can
use some more explanation. Does this mean you upload your icon to some
location on the web and then specify that location? If so, where would be
the likely location to put it? In your Drupal "files" directory? Somewhere
else? What's the story?]
:: *Upload custom icon:* Upload an icon from your computer. [How does this
work? When I upload it, where am I uploading it TO? The hint on the settings
page says, "If you don't have direct file access to the server, use this
field to upload your shortcut icon." What does that mean? What is "direct
file access to the server"? If I don't have it, how can I upload the icon?
And so on.]
Hints:
How to make your icon. (maybe external link?) [Yes. There are several sites
where you can take your image and turn it into a favicon.]
