Well, that would be a better place, but the problem at hand is that of
letting typical handbook contributors add images if needed. As far as I
can tell, I can't add images to those galleries (even with the editor
role). All users can attach images to issues, however.

So, are you proposing to give all users permission to post image nodes?

I want to add an inline image for a handbook entry. Found the image
submission guide line [1] but there's no way of embedding the image. img
tags are disabled and there's no way to upload it. Am I supposed make a
link from another site? I hope not.

That page should be more clear about how your expected to submit an
image.

I suspect these docs are simply out of date as they are over a year old.
You need site maintainer access to add images but not everyone doing
docs is a site maintainer anymore. There is currently discussion going
on about how to let module/theme maintainers add screenshots and I guess
this would need to be covered as well.

I'll leave the decision of what to do about that page up to the higher
ups, but I figured I'd at least explain why there are docs when most
people don't have access. :)

Thanks for the explanation. I wonder what the holdup is. Illustrating
handbook pages would be a big help to everyone.

Is there an archive of the discussion around here. I'm not really
interested in subscribing to the documentation mailing list.

Ok, here's a test and possible workflow. Since the handbook editor role
can use <img> tags, can images be uploaded as attachements to a
documentation issue, and then linked in the handbook by an editor?

So, this seems to work- I can link to the screen shot I posted above on
a handbook page using the "full html" input format. Does this make
sense as a mechanism? The uploaded files for issues seem to be stored
in a separate subdirectory:

I think a better place than on issues is in the image galleries:

If we need new galleries to hold the images then we can always ask for
them to be made.
