I have no significant experience with Dreamhost.  Pending the outcome of a 
dispute with 1 & 1, I'll have a strong opinion about them, however.  I have 
several Drupal sites running at 1 & 1, and they provide full shell access and 
mod_php.  However, if they don't fix a major screw up that I've complained 
about for months, their name will be dirt from my perspective.
