What you want to do is to create a page to take the place of the front 
page, and then set the default frontpage to the URL of that. So you have 
to answer the question of "If I don't want content promoted to the front 
page, what content do I want there?"

The simplest way is to create a page node, and set the default frontpage 
to "node/NID" where NID is the node id of the page you created.
