[support] permissions problems

Strange permissions behavior:
I'm using Drupal 5.1 and the blog module and events module.
Recently, content started disappearing for any user but the administrator.
Funny thing was, it wasn't all at once, but gradual - for instance, for
awhile only some events would show up. Then none at all.

I turned off each of the access permissions one by one to identify which
permission was toggling between seeing no content and seeing the content.

What I found is that if I have "Access Content" and "Administer nodes"
checked in the nodes section, the user can view the content. However, if
I have just "Access Content" checked, the user cannot view the content.
I want anonymous users, etc to view content, but not to administer it!

Any ideas what is going on and how I can repair this?
