Not that I really like LDAP much, but using Drupal with OpenLDAP
(slapd) on *nix servers works just fine.  We do almost all the
authentication on our 50+ sites here using LDAP.

Another possibility is OpenID (http://openid.net,
http://drupal.org/project/openid).  This might be the wave of the
future.
