[support] immediate installation errors

I've discovered something that might be helpful to someone out there in
helping me determine what is wrong. I'm trying to install two other PHP
applications and ALL of them complain about not being able to write to
destinations that are writeable. Does anyone know of a setting that I
might have missed in PHP?
