[support] Simplenews: additional fields

I have researched for hours without finding a solution, and wonder if anyone
could help?

I need to offer site visitors a chance to subscribe to my e-newsletter, but
(a) without signing up to become users, and (b) WITH a few additional fields
such as firstname and lastname.

The Simplenews module is great, but I do not see how to achieve (b) with it.
I have looked at masses of other options but none quite works. Could anyone
offer a suggestion?
