Thanks to both Earnie and Hans for responding.

In the end I just manually typed in usernames and addresses into an
address book in The Bat!, sent the email to myself and BCC'd the
list. I can manually update the list as (if!) new members join.

As I'm running this site for my local doctor's practice I'm loathe to
stray too far from the core modules unless I'm confident that
contributed modules are robust and need little tweaking.

It does seem to me that a *simple* facility to send a message to
one's members is needed. It need do nothing else, no bells, no
whistles just send a message to all authenticated users. I wish I had
the time to learn these new-fangled languages so that I could write
it myself but my coding career ended nearly forty years ago!
