[support] Using drupal to setup file download area

Hi,

i was wondering whether it is possible to setup a downloading area
within drupal where the files do NOT go through the drupal uploading process
(the reason being is that they are too big)

The scenario is that i have a folder on the server to which i copy the
files to be downloaded. However, this folder is NOT accessible via the URL.
So does anyone know of some sort of module (i don't think the drupal
core does it) which parses a folder (which, again, resides outside the
DocumentRoot)
and is able to expose the files contained therein?
