if we treated images as source, we would be forced to distribute the  
psd files used
to create them too, otherwise we are essentially distributing  
compiled images.

personally i don't think the gpl reaches to images, otherwise any  
image used by any
gpl program would have to be gpl'd too. That means even your logo  
that you upload
to your site becomes gpl.
