I can understand that. You instinctively want to go with what you know,
It took a while before it started to click. Too easy to whip up some code.
I think I can still do things quicker in code, but at least I understand
there
is a higher level of achievement to be had.
I only hacked the core in 2 places though. Both were to get rid of
annoying
warnings. The theme is another story. Way beyond going back,

I had this experience lately from another angle.
Was teaching a php programmer to develop a site in Drupal 7 but they
didn't get it and kept reverting back to hacking the core, modules and
themes instead of just doing the drupal thing and using the tools.
Go figure!
