I frankly don't have the time for it. There is some cvs explanation on
drupal.org and I reckon there exist tutorials for popular tools such as
tortoiseCVS. Maybe somebody else can help out.

What needs to be done now is to branch the repository for Drupal 5 and
to create a proper release. The proper documentation for this is also on
drupal.org.
