Basically, I'd love if all translations teams could migrate to the
central server on drupal.org, once it is in place, so I am not
actively suggesting you setting up your own instance now. The central
server will take maintenance burden from you, translations would be
comparable, as all would work on the same releases of the same
projects, stuff like cross-downloading 4 translations of 10 modules
would be much easier if all is in one place, and drupal.org will get
data back from the central server to show translation status on
project pages (as part of quality metrics for projects). So lots of
things suggest a central drupal.org server, but as outlined in the
post above, I'd like people to have a good UI experience with that
(while the current working versions are nice to work with but still to
be refined) and also a snappy response time, which is still to be
achieved with the load requirements on the server.

So for now, if you'd like to enjoy the translation server, feel free
to join one team (if you can agree on a superset of what releases of
what projects you'd like to translate), or start your own instance for
now.

I'd like to have better contact with those running an instance of the
server, so please mail me in private, and we will figure out
something. It would be good to discuss ideas, and directions, so all
good developments and innovations at individual teams are integrated
as possible.
