Hi,

here could be many reasons for this. The one I find most often in the  
number of terms you have. If you have hundreds or thousands of terms  
then when ever taxonomy_get_tree() is called it will run out of memory.

Try adding the xdebug php extension as it will give a more details  
backtrace when this happens and you can tell where it had the problem.  
This could also lead to the straw that broke the camels back, but  
should be a start.
