Could Cache'ing be your issue?

I'm a Drupal novice - so this is just a
quick thought from the peanut gallery.

Have you looked at your Cache settings.
The Apress book says Drupal defaults
this to on, but I've noticed Caching
disabled in all of our installs.

Let me know if this turns out to the
issue.

We've run into problems with sites
running on Site5, where they
claimed Drupal was using too much
server resources, even with
  virtually no traffic. However, others
have been running sites on
Site5 with no problem so our
experience does not seem to have been
  typical.
