Yes, that is my idea. I do that too, mostly because of legacy content, where 
internal links went boo-boo. 

But it so happened that suddenly my themes were all "fixed" too :) Think about 
url() calls in CSS (they broke), or statically called images/logos in a 
theme. etc.
