I find that the Akismet module is fairly good about keeping spam out of public 
viewing.  It doesn't require any captcha or other check, but relies on 
distributed back-end heuristics and is free for non-commercial use.  (The 
module is GPL, the service has a fee for commercial use.)  Highly 
recommended.
