I use the Image Picker module, and I've been pretty pleased with that.  
It does not create image nodes or anything like that, but for inline  
stuff in articles or blog posts I usually don't care about making nodes.

It's only a dev snapshot and it's only for 5.x, but it's worked well  
enough for my purposes.
