I think I solved this issue. I found a "mail" setting under site
configuration. I experimented with the "Use mime mail for all messages" and
"Plain text e-mail only" options. I discovered if I set the mail setting to
"plain text only", a confirmation e-mail is sent and received for both
registration and cancellation. I just wish I would have figured this out
hours ago.... :)
