Just for completeness, try a path for the calendar of node/%/calendar.  It may 
be that the % is required in the path for the argument to pick up.  Then 
remove the date argument to make sure it's not confusing things.  (I'm not 
sure, but it's the first thing that occurs to me.)

You can still force the page to show only on group nodes by specifying a 
validator of "group node".
