[support] Hiding a site, best practice?

That is a different question and one that you will want to use an access
control module for. This list node access modules listed out
an explanation of what they do http://drupal.org/node/270000 so this might
lead you to the right place. I have done setups like this with nodeaccess
http://drupal.org/project/nodeaccess.
