Thank you Jarry.
Seems like I cannot have use of the calendar functions on my test pc 
which has the latest Ubuntu upgrades and updates.
I won't be degrading php, I'm not so familiar with the system to know 
how to do this with safety, I am extremely worried that if the tech 
updates our drupal server our site will probably fail due to this 
condition. ouch!
