[support] creating customize search page using views

Hi, maybe it is just me, but I can't seem to locate instructions on how to
create a custom search results page using views 7 under drupal 7. All I
found was talk about modifying the search-results.tpl.php file and I rally
don't want to start doing that. Is there a way to do it in views?  What I
want to do is take the user and date/time out of the display at this point.
