[support] references or entity reference?

Hi,

Trying to decide whether to references (node and user) or entity reference
modules..

Does anyone have a good way to describe when to use which?

I know references has more additional modules because its come from a D6
base while entity reference is new to D7 so hasn't had much developed for
it.. What are the advantages to the newer entity reference module other
than being able to reference entities other than users and nodes (assuming
there are any)??

I have looked at the relation module but it looks too much for what I need
and doesn't have a user friendly way of creating the relationships on
entities during creation or editing..

Any thoughts or opinions appreciated..
